(more specifically Badwater Basin, as stated in the answer to the question) was thought to be the lowest point on land in the Western Hemisphere – until the discovery of Laguna del Carbón in Argentina, which is 344 feet (105 metres) below sea level. (This is according to Wikipedia, which doesn't seem to say when the Laguna was discovered.)
